Amanda, with respect for your work and your skilled analysis, I find myself curious about how you find a faith home in evangelicalism, if you do? What are the positives, for you?
Thanks for your question. I am in a curious position, because I don't identify as an evangelical, but I attend a church with one foot in evangelical circles and one foot in Catholicism--aka the Anglican church. Theologically, I am different than the denomination, but the specific group of people I go to church with focus on ministering to the unhoused and to children, two areas that are really important to me. So I've found a home among them even while holding conflicting values about things, specifically LGBTQ inclusion. Since I live in the South, specifically in small town Texas, there are not a lot of affirming options for me churchwise. So it's a compromise for the time being.
Amanda, thanks so much for taking time to answer. As a pastor, I’m always curious about how people find a welcoming community…or one that shares enough of their values. I love that your congregation is putting their heart into your unhoused neighbors, and into children.
