Happy St. Nicholas’s Day! I love a fat saint and St. Nicholas is the fattest one we have in popular culture. (Although St. Thomas Aquinas might rival him for biggest belly…)
I want to talk about New Year’s. Yes, even before Christmas gets here. There is so much to sift through when New Year’s arrives—the volume on those “New year, New you” diet culture ads is turned up to eleven.
So let’s talk about it. First, let’s bust a few myths:
The “REAL YOU” is NOT hiding inside your current body, no matter how small or large you are. You are you—including your body—today.
Losing weight WON’T make you a better person. It might make some things easier—like clothes shopping or flying or other sundry things—but it won’t make you better. Body size is not a moral issue. Let’s stop treating as such.
A new exercise routine WILL NOT change your life as much as ACCEPTING YOUR BODY will. Move with joy and start a new routine! Just don’t expect it to solve all your body image issues.
YOUR 2025 BODY is GOOD. Already. Without amendment.
If you’re a person of (Christian) faith, I have a special resource for you this New Year’s. It’s my Faithful Embodiment Workbook: 31 days to peace with your body. I’m offering it for $30—that’s less than a dollar a day for a focus on the goodness of your body to start your year in peace instead of body anxiety.
If $30 isn’t in your budget—I totally understand. I still offer a lot of free resources and will be posting a bit in the new year!
