There’s a trope going around that is a very common assumption, that obesity is caused by an addiction to food.
Indeed, there are addiction-treatment programs that are using GLP-1s to combat addictions other than food, leaning into this trope. “If it works for food addiction,” they reason, “it can work for opioids and the like.” (Like they’re doing in this article.)
But here’s the problem with this line of reasoning: obesity isn’t caused by an addiction to food, because food addiction isn’t a thing.
